In an island-nation known for its rich cultural heritage, MICAS is shaping Malta into a contemporary art hub with its world-class program of exhibitions.

Situated in the Mediterranean between Italy and North Africa, the island of Malta is known for its 5,000-year-old megalithic temples, crystal clear lagoon waters, and cinematic landscapes. Building on that cultural legacy, Malta International Contemporary Art Space (MICAS) – Malta’s first contemporary museum – is expanding the country’s presence in the international contemporary art stage.

“It was a challenge for us to present what was essentially a start-up, with no history or a completed building, and from a small nation to boot,” Phyllis Muscat explained at the museum’s opening. “Our enthusiasm pushed us to develop this concept and build up interest in the circles of international art, and we achieved this concretely through the networks we built with international artists, curators, museums, foundations and art historians, and the acquisitions we made.”
