Edward Pirotta Sculptor (1939-1968)

by BDL

This book is about Edward Pirotta, a young Maltese sculptor from Naxxar who focussed on portraiture and the human figure. He tragically died at the age of 29 years in a motorcycle accident in the United Kingdom. The study documents his work while he studied in Malta and at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome, and subsequently at Vilmo Gibello’s studio in London.

The climax of the book is the analysis of the Blackamoors Case when Edward Pirotta in 1966 received sensational coverage in the British press. His work was featured in ‘The Sunday Times Magazine’ in the United Kingdom, of August 14, 1966. The feature was intended to burst one of the greatest bubbles of the antique business both in Britain and Europe. The book ends with the sculptor’s demise and a discussion of his legacy.
