The “Antique Maltese Clocks” exhibition organised by Fondazzjoni Patrimonju Malti in 1992 consisted of a vast variety of unique lavish and ornate baroque timepieces, produced exclusively in the Maltese Islands. The display was the first time that these fine examples of Maltese craftsmanship had been assembled, allowing a rare and fascinating insight into the Islands’ social history. It was also the first time that such a number of artefacts had been sourced from private collectors, as has been the case with most Patrimonuju exhibitions, thus giving the opportunity to the public to view items never previously shown – The origin of the Maltese clock is unclear. What is remarkable is that a small Island country was able to sustain an indigenous clockmaking trade. They were produced over a period of around one hundred and fifty years solely for the local market at a time when only the aristocracy and the Church could afford them.
