MICAS ranked in 2025’s ‘must-see museums’ by Contemporary Lynx

An international nod to Malta’s cultural ambition and contemporary vision

Malta International Contemporary Art Space has been selected by Contemporary Lynx as one of the “10 New Museums Around the World to Visit in 2025”, a recognition places that places MICAS in the company of some of the most innovative, forward-thinking cultural institutions across the globe, from São Paulo to Sharjah, Berlin to Bangkok.
In highlighting MICAS, Contemporary Lynx celebrates not only a museum, but a vision: a bold, creative space that champions contemporary art in all its forms, in dialogue with Malta’s layered heritage, Mediterranean identity, and global perspectives.
“The museum’s building harmoniously combines contemporary architecture with the historical 17th-century Floriana fortifications. Led by architect Carlo Terpolilli of the Florentine firm Ipostudio, the modern intervention to the historical landscape is defined by providing a contrasting yet complementary dialogue between modernity and the past, blending into the city’s panorama,” writes Nazar Atamaniuk.
MICAS was ranked alongside the new building of the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw (MSN) opened in October 2024, the Naoshima New Museum of Art in Japan, and the Guggenheim Museum in Abu Dhabi.
MICAS is certainly not just about walls and galleries but a platform and educational catalyst for conversations between international artists, curators, and communities.
“This global recognition affirms what many in Malta and beyond already feel: MICAS is a new cultural landmark, ready to host world-class exhibitions and play a meaningful role in shaping the contemporary art narrative in the region,” said MICAS executive chairperson Phyllis Muscat.
MICAS’s programming has already set the tone for its ambition. With works and commissions by globally renowned artists including Ugo Rondinone and Conrad Shawcross, as well as a strong commitment to supporting contemporary artists in Malta, MICAS is creating a dynamic calendar of exhibitions, public events, artist talks, and educational initiatives.
“By weaving Malta into the global art conversation, the museum is offering visitors a powerful opportunity: to experience contemporary art that challenges, inspires, and connects,” said MICAS Artistic Director Edith Devaney.
Malta is already a cultural destination, not just for its rich history but for its creative present and future, and today MICAS stands at the forefront. “MICAS signals that contemporary art matters here. That it belongs here. That Malta is ready to be part of the conversation,” Devaney said.
