We are very pleased to announce that the 3rd edition of the MICAS International Art Weekend will be happening on the 15th and 16th of October 2021. This year’s edition will showcase the specially commissioned work Sea Cave (Entrance), a site-specific piece by celebrated contemporary artist Cristina Iglesias at Hastings Gardens in Valletta. Hailing from the Basque Country and working in Madrid, the artist (b.1956) creates profound contemplative spaces of imagination using a unique sculptural vocabulary expressed in work that can be found in inner cities or remote islands.
Cristina Iglesias brings into being outdoor structures and installations using water as an integral element soliciting the viewer to pensively follow the water’s flow and surge progressions. She offers compositions of many layers, textures, illusionary depths, and created sequences: metaphors for memory, life, and uncovering what is underneath.
The MICAS International Art Weekend 2021 will therefore proudly unveil Cristina Iglesias’ Sea Cave (Entrance) as a new exciting national acquisition that will remain accessible for the public to visit and enjoy at Hastings Gardens presently. The work will eventually be relocated to the MICAS Sculpture Garden on the San Salvatore Counterguard overlooking Marsamxett Harbour. VIEW EVENT
The MICAS International Art Weekend 2021 will also provide an opportunity for the MICAS audience and the general public to meet the artist in person and hear her speak about her work. The art talk ‘In Conversation with Cristina Iglesias’ will be moderated by international curator Edith Devaney and it will be hosted at MUŻA in Valletta on the 16th of October 2021. VIEW EVENT
